I went to listen to the speakers outside the Israeli Embassy, London at the end of the protest march yesterday. 25,000 people marched due to the sorrow and outrage felt after the murder of nine innocent people abroad the Flotilla in International waters (who were bringing aid to Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip) by Israeli officers. Activists want the UK government to cull all trade agreements with Israel to show the distain felt by the international community and the severity of what they have done; a total breach of human rights laws: completely unnecessary killings.

The issues between the Israeli and Palestinian people are terribly old and clotted, but what's going on for civilians in the Gaza Strip (abject poverty) is sickening and needs to be stopped, and the murder of nine people who were trying to bring them necessities is miserable and just shows how desperate this situation is. Let us hope that the Martyr’s abroad the Flotilla did not die in vain.

MAP OF THE GAZA STRIP, 1991

Today more than 1.4 million Palestinian men, women, and children are trapped in the Gaza Strip. Their daily lives - in an area of land just 40 km long and 9.5 km wide - are marked by power shortages, little or no running water of poor quality and deteriorating health care. Mass unemployment, extreme poverty, and food insecurity both exacerbate and are deepened by the impact of the Israeli blockage, which was brought into force in 2007.

The six controlled crossings, five controlled by Israeli authorities and one by the Egyption authorities are kept closed and prevent the movement of Palestinians into and out of Gaza in all but a handful of exceptional humanitarian cases.

Dear Diary

Today my boyfriend told me he loved me. I didn't know what to say, so as I was cutting a slice I said, "Have another piece of cake!" He was rather embarrassed and didn't know what to say back. We ignored the whole thing, and when I dropped him home later we had an awkward kiss goodbye.

RUINED By Lynn Nottage
Thu 15 Apr 2010 - Sat 5 Jun 2010, Almeida Theatre, Islington
Ruined at Almeida Theatre

As someone who is interested in raising public awareness of the atrocities in the DRC, especially in relation to violence against women, I found Ruined gripping, real and heart wrenching, a play which could speak to the general public and make them want to get involved in the issues.

Lynn Nottage succeeded in writing a script, which was able to examine the complexities of the conflict in the DRC and its horrific affect on the Congolese people, in particular on women, while still allowing for humour to soften the reality of war. The characters had immense strength and ability to cope in completely traumatic situations, the actors excelled in telling their stories.

Ruined is disturbing at times, but has to be to portray the truth of the war that is continuing in the DRC over metal, money and power. Women's bodies are the battlefields of which this war is fought; this play portrays the stories of these women remarkably.

I would recommend that everyone in London go to see this play.

Taxidermy

Almighty animals. Aren't they great? They're dead, they're taxiderm-ified, but that's good, right? So we can take a look, and not be scared of certain death-by-feeding/hugging. I think this bear is a brown bear (or Grizzly Bear - subspecies of Brown Bear), so would not actively kill to eat a woman/man. The leopard might eat us, because leopards in Africa eat mid-sized antelope. Thanks Wikipedia!

Brown Bears have long claws, great for digging up insects. This photo is extremely cute.

AB FLEX

Take a look at this ridiculous contraption!!

I was thinking about working out, and working out in the nineties. I remembered that when I was about 13, which was 1996, I some how convinced my Dad to buy an Ab Flex! The infomercial made me think I was going to get a super flat stomach if I used it for - I dunno, seven minutes a day.
Truth be told, when it arrived, we used it for a week or two, then buried it in the cupboard at the back of our TV room, only to drag out on occasion to humour/impress friends.

The below news release from 1997, states that the infomercials and advertisements for such exercise equipment made exaggerated weight loss claims, which is certainly obvious, if you remember the abs they used.
I still feel the fact that I got my Dad to order one was a great feat, as Dad's never usually buy into this crap!
